Abstract :

Most of the rivers in Maharashtra have prominent knick points and at such locations rocky beds of rivers exhibit development of mega potholes. Potholes as minor landform indicating active erosional phase of the channel are otherwise a common feature of rocky bed. However when developed on a large scale they warrant special attention. The details study of the morphology of potholes can help the understanding of geological controls as well as the flow conditions of the channel. In the present paper an attempt has been made to study the morphological variations of the potholes developed by river Kukadi, a tributary of Bhima drainage system from Western Maharashtra. River Kukadi in its lower reaches attains 7th order of stream and has catchment area of about 2000 km 2. Mega potholes are located at Nighoj just about 10 km upstream its confluence with river Ghod. The study area is a rocky stretch of 1.5 km, which forms a boundary between Pune and Ahmednagar districts of Maharashtra. A prominent knick point is observed at the intersection of 180 55' N and 740 15' E. At this point, river Kukadi has incised a deep gorge (depth 40 – 50 m width 10 m and length 200 m) This particular area is marked with potholes exhibiting various stages of development. The potholes are confined mainly to the gorge area and their frequency as well as depth goes on decreasing away from the main channel.
