Abstract :

Participation of women in PRIs has great importance, as the objective of constituting local governance is to encourage local leadership according to the developmental needs of the rural villages. The inclusion of well qualified women in village Panchayat at the initial state of the interlocution of Panchayati Raj system in rural areas would be an important instrumental measure in planning for improving social status and empowering women. Political participation of women does not mean only women's participation in electoral and administrative processes. But also, it includes the whole range of voluntary activities which has a bearing on the political process including voting, supporting political groups, communicating with legislators, disseminating political views and opinions among the electorate and other related activities. Lack of political skill, training, proper information and patronage are the various causes for which women are not able to take part in political activities equally with their male counterpart.
