DRAVIDIAN PARTIES IN THE POLITICAL SCENARIO OF INDEPENDENT TAMIL NADU

Abstract :

The Justice Party was in power in the erstwhile Madras Presidency from 1921to 1937. It was the party organised against the domination of the Brahmins in the political affairs of the Madras Presidency. It awakened the Dravidians and brought them united in the political sphere. The party when was in power protected the interests of the non-Brahmins and all the Dravidian elements. Hence it is apt to call the Justice Party as the 'Mother of Dravidian Parties' which are mostly formed in the Independent Tamil Nadu. As the Justice party began to decline in 1930s, there emerged within its ranks one of the most dynamic and colourful political leaders South India has ever produced. He was E.V. Ramasami Naicker (popularly known as Periyar). During his adolescent years, he grew up in a religious atmosphere, and visited several pilgrim centres throughout India. He was able to understand the evils of popular Hinduism and the exploitation of masses by Brahmin priests. He was a great crusader for social liberation of the women and depressed class people. He took the mantleship of Justice Party in 1938 and later renamed it as Dravidar Kazhgham. Another notable Dravidian personality was C.N.Annadurai. He adoped E.V.R. as his leader.He was atonce Disrraeli, Churchill, Edmund Burke and Nehru. He formulated his ideas and sometimes kept notes. Consequently , a whole generation of speakers imitated his style and carried out the Dravidian philosophy to towns and village. E.V.R. selected his activity in social sphere while Annadurai selected his activity in political sphere. Annadurai was the central figure in the activities of Dravidian Parties which began to rule Tamil Nadu since 1967.
