Volume : II, Issue : XII, January - 2013 IMPACT OF FLOOD ON SOCIETY: A CASE STUDY IN MURSHIDABAD, WEST BENGALSWATI MOLLAH Published By : Laxmi Book Publication Abstract : Every year floods result in colossal damage in Murshidabad. The magnitude of
the flood problem is assessed in terms of the different types of damage brought out by
floods. Flood damage information is helpful in providing a better understanding of a
number of issues concerning flood problems. The flood in 2000 was unprecedented and
completely shattered the local economy. The sufferings of the people and damage to
property have gradually increased despite measures taken on a large scale, due to
population increase and to development lacking interdepartmental coordination and
participatory flood management measures as well as disaster mitigation and
preparedness. The loss of crops, livestock and other properties were estimated to be one
exceeding Rs. 2000 crore (Flood Preparedness and Management Plan, 2009). This
paper tries to assess the impacts of flood on rural economy of Murshidabad. It is found
that housing and croplands are most affected sectors. Occurrence of food during critical
stages of this crop development severely affects the production of this crop and
consequently led to depressed yields. Keywords : Article : Cite This Article : SWATI MOLLAH, (2013). IMPACT OF FLOOD ON SOCIETY: A CASE STUDY IN MURSHIDABAD, WEST BENGAL.
