Abstract :

It is not often that dreams come true, but the Dream of Prohibition came true as soon as the Congress Ministry assumed office in Madras State in July 1937 under the Premiership of Rajaji.1 In the Election Manifesto of the Congress Party, introduction of Prohibition was an important pledge to be implemented by the Congress Ministry. Rajaji was the First Premier who brought Prohibition into practice. He was an ardent Advocate of Prohibition who followed the footprints of Gandhi. As a staunch follower of Gandhi in his fight against drink, his first Act after assuming the Office of the Premier was the introduction of Prohibition in 1937 in his own birth place, Salem
