Volume : II, Issue : VII, August - 2012 Child Sex Ratio In Karnataka- A Spatio- Temporal AnalysisD. Mahesha and B.N. Shivalingappa Published By : Laxmi Book Publication Abstract : Sex Ratio is a sensitive indicator that displays in a way the status of women.
Concerted efforts are needed to create equal regard and affection for the girl child. The
sex ratio among children (0 to 6 years) is showing a continuous decline in northern states
like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Gujarat. Many families decide to
remove the female foetus in a quest for sons. Unfortunately this happens in the more
educated and affluent localities. The motivation is primarily to protect property, family
business and to avoid giving dowry. If there has to be a change in mindset, leaders in
society have to show the way. Otherwise the population will become skewed leading to a
host of societal problems like increased crime against women. This paper tries to
examine the regional patterns of sex ratio for children aged 0 to 6 using District level
data collected by the 2011 census. Great regional disparities in sex ratios among young
children were observed. Nearly half of State population now lives in areas where the sex
ratio of children aged 0 to 6 is below 943 girls per 1000 boys. Declining sex ratios has
already become a serious social problem. Some explanations are offered for regional
variations in the sex ratios of young children. Keywords : Article : Cite This Article : D. Mahesha and B.N. Shivalingappa, (2012). Child Sex Ratio In Karnataka- A Spatio- Temporal Analysis.
