Abstract :

Flavonolglucosides, quercetin-3-o-(6``-E-p-coumaryl)-â-D-glucopyranoside (1) and quercetin-3-o- â-D-glucopyranoside (2) along with stigmasterol 3-o- â-D-glucopyranoside (3) have been isolated from the aerial parts of Hibiscusdongolensis Del. Compounds 1 -3 were identified for the first time in genus Hibiscus. Structure elucidation of compounds 1–3 was based on MS, 1D and 2D NMR data. The petroleum ether and ethyl acetate extracts showed hypoglycaemic effect and significant lowering in total cholesterol, serum triglycerides and HDL cholesterol levels. In addition, the ethyl acetate extract showed antimicrobial activity against Staph aureus 25175 and methicillin resistant Staph aureus MRSA 15187. Furthermore a dose-dependent decrease in blood pressure and heart rate were observed after oral administration of petroleum ether and ethyl acetate extracts of Hibiscus dongolensis.
