GENERALIST SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE EVIDENCE-BASED PERSPECTIVE

Abstract :

Evidence based practice is one useful approach to improving the impact of practice in psychology, social work, nursing and allied fields. Of course, professions have directed considerable attention to "evidence" for many years. They have also honored many different kinds of evidence. EBP advocates put particular emphasis on the results of large-scale experimental comparisons to document the efficacy of treatments against untreated control groups, against other treatments, or both. They do this because well conceptualized and completed experiments are a great way to show a treatment caused a specific change. The ability to make cause and effect determinations is the great strength of experiments. Scholars in social work and other professions have argued for "Many Ways of Knowing" . They seek to honor the knowledge developed by many different kinds of research - and to remind researchers and the public that the conceptualization underlying research may be too narrow and limited. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is one of the most important developments in decades for the helping professions—including medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, public health, counseling, and all the other health and human service professions (Briggs & Rzepnicki, 2004). That is because evidencebased practice holds out the hope for practitioners that we can be at least as successful in helping our clients as the current available information on helping allows us to be. Evidence-based practice represents both an ideology and a method. The ide-ology springs from the ethical principle that clients deserve to be provided with the most effective interventions possible. The method of EBP is the way we go about finding and then implementing those interventions. This pursuit of the best knowledge includes extensive computer searches, as described in the following
