WITNESSING THE PAST : CHAMANNAHALS AZADI

Abstract :

Past repeats itself, time and again, in the shape of the historical fiction. A historical novel is a colourful canvass on which characters, both real and imaginary, are constructed. Siobhan Lyons says,“Because history can be seen to be a malleable artefact, it proves to be a most useful tool to employ when writing fiction. And because history is often chaotic, fiction can be seen as perhaps the only way to approach it. By fictionalizing it, to an extent, a writer admits to his/her own limitations in constructing the past via the present context”(WEB).In the historical novels, previously existing characters, incidents and circumstances re-emerge and are reinterpreted through the intellectual machinations of the novelists. Of these, the few novels which came out in the 1960's and 70's, such as Khushwant Singh's Train to Pakistan(1961) or, more famously,ChamanNahal'sAzadi(1975) bore the responsibility of describing the fratricidal violenceat the time of the partition of India in 1947. Regarding the bifurcation of India, Gandhiji declares,“the vivisection of India is like the vivisection of my own body”, Nehru says that by “cutting of the head we will get rid of the headache”, whereas Jinnah endorses partition comparing it to “a surgicaloperation”. Hence K. R. SrinivasaIyenger aptly opines, “The leaders had sowed the wind of communal suspicion and partition was the result; like a whirlwind, the mad act of partition was uprooting masses of humanity, mangling them and throwing them across the border heap after heap”(498).
