Abstract :

The study examines the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of higher secondary students (N=559, male 311, female 248) residing in Adi-Dravidar Welfare Hostels of Tiruchirappalli district in Tamil Nadu. A self prepared questionnaire covering the socio-economic and demographic parameters was used for data collection. The result shows that size and type of family, facilities at home, educational and employment status of parents are the major pull factors and lack of transport facilities, availability of private schools, special coaching and private tuition centres are the major push factors that determine the students to avail hostel facility provided under Adi- Dravidar Welfare Department. The study also reveals that the hostel environment would create an opportunity for interacting and sharing the knowledge and experience with different communities. This indicates that more number of hostels with good infrastructure facilities in rural areas would enhance the equity in the field of education.
