Abstract :

The Makum Coalfield is located in Upper Assam of North Eastern India. The present study is confined only to the Tikak Parbat Formation of Barail Group (Oligocene) and based on the analysis of surface and subsurface data. Spatio-temporal variation patterns of chemical parameters of five regional coal seams i.e. 60ft., 7ft., 20ft., 5ft., and 8ft. seams of the Tikak Parbat succession suggest a strong influence of depositional setting on coal quality. Comparative study of the distribution patterns in sulphur, carbon and volatile matter content in coals have revealed several high and low value zones and in general, two distinct areal zones can be recognised in the coal basin where the chemical parameters show some geologically significant interrelationship.
