BHOPAL: As more skeletons tumble out of the scam-ridden Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB), chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has admitted for the first time on Wednesday that 1,000 fake candidates were selected for jobs and courses through the board since 2007. "As many as 1,000 of 1.47 lakh appointments and selections made by the board have been found to be fake," Chouhan told the Assembly while replying to the motion of thanks on the governor's address. Chouhan said whosoever is found guilty during the probe wouldn't be spared irrespective of position. "We ordered a probe into the scam immediately after it was unearthed in 2009 and asked authorities to look into selections and appointments since 2006," he said. Indore crime branch came in for praise from the CM for taking swift action by arresting suspected impostors appearing for selection test for courses. Special Task Force (STF) is one of the best investigating agencies in the country and is above suspicion, he said, adding the government had decided to hand over the case to STF in view of magnitude of scam. The state's Directorate of Medical Education has taken action against 153 students, including those who cleared entrance exams by using ghost writers. Those currently in government colleges have been suspended and the rest are being prosecuted. Congress member Mukesh Nayak, who wasn't satisfied with the reply, insisted on handing over the case to the CBI. He alleged the state government was trying to protect its own people involved in the scam. On January 22, the Madhya Pradesh high court will hear more than 100 petitions on the PEB scam.
