NEW DELHI: University Grants Commission (UGC), the higher education authority, in a letter to Vice Chancellors asked the educational institutions to install alarm bells to curb the menace of ragging. UGC's notice has also suggested several other measures to stop the ragging in educational institutions.
Short films, documentaries, counselling and surprise inspection sessions within the educational institutions premises are some of the measures suggested by UGC.
At least two students of the National Law Institute University (NLIU) in Bhopal filed complaints with the UGC's anti-ragging helpline accusing their seniors of indulging in ragging, sexual abuse and alcohol consumption on the campus recently.
"You are requested to step up anti-ragging mechanism by way of adequate publicity through various mediums; constitution of anti-ragging committee and anti ragging squad, setting up of Anti Ragging Cell, installing CCTV cameras at vital points, Anti- Ragging workshops, updating all websites with nodal officers complete details, alarm bells etc," said the notice.
The notice also said that any violation of these regulations will be viewed seriously.
"If any institution fails to take adequate steps to prevent ragging or does not act in accordance with these Regulations or fails to punish perpetrators of incidents of ragging suitably, it will attract punitive action against itself by the UGC," said the notice.
Counselling and anti-ragging warnings
The current notice also asked educational institutions to do regular interaction and counseling with the students, identification of trouble-triggers, mention of Anti-ragging warning in the institution's prospectus and information booklets/brochures.
It also asked them to do surprise inspection of hostels, students accommodation, canteens, rest cum recreational rooms, toilets, bus-stands and any other measure which would augur well in preventing/quelling ragging and any uncalled for behavior/incident shall be undertaken.
Short films and documentaries
UGC has taken a step further for creating awareness against ragging. UGC has got developed four short films and a documentary film to counsel students on the ill effects of ragging. These films are uploaded on UGC website. The notice which has been uploaded on the UGC website asked all Universities or Institutions to show these films regularly to the students during orientation and other programmes.
Anti-Ragging App
Taking a tough stand against ragging, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on May 29 this year said that it needed to be completely eliminated from campuses. Launching an anti-ragging mobile app introduced by the UGC which will help students register complaints against ragging, he said that physical and mental torture of a new student won't be tolerated by the government and the new app will work as a handy tool for any student who goes through such experience. | | Related Keywords : | | UGC Curb Inspections |
