JALANDHAR: Punjab Technical University (PTU) has issued a statement that it has stopped only those courses "which are far away from UGC/AICTE valid nomenclature of guidelines". The varsity statement came after the BJP slammed discontinuation of courses on human values in PTU started during the tenure of vice-chancellor Rajneesh Arora. It also asked chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh to stop "Congressization" of the education system. The university has also stated that Ph D programmes in Punjabi and English had also been put under 'no admission' category for the forthcoming academic session along with human values course-the only stream on which the BJP has reacted. The varsity has decided to put certain courses in 'no admission zone' for the current year, which do not meet the requisite latest guidelines of the apex academic regulatory bodies. "In-line with modern day requirement of the job market, PTU has decided to start new courses like Bachelor of Urban Planning at its main campus. The decisions have been taken after detailed deliberations by members of academic council in its recent meeting," said a varsity spokesperson. "The academic council, in its meeting last week, had set up a committee consisting of the V-C of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla; a professor of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jalandhar; and a director of a management institute with a view to ascertain the courses that are running against the latest guidelines of UGC/AICTE. The committee presented its recommendations that since the university is not running PG programme in humanities (English, Punjabi and human values), therefore, it cannot continue with the Ph D in these subjects. On MTech (holistic development) course, the committee recommended that it was not as per the approved valid nomenclature of AICTE/UGC so university should first take approval of it or degrees given by the university shall not be recognized by UGC thereby putting the students' future in jeopardy," the spokesperson said to stress that the decision was based on rules and guidelines rather than on political considerations. The PTU statement mentioned that the committee also gave its recommendation on PG diploma in human values, which was started for preparing the teachers to teach in the constituent colleges the varsity. "The committee observed that as per the latest guidelines of UGC a teacher must possess PG degree in respective discipline with 55% marks with UGC NET. Therefore, the students who qualify this diploma after graduation shall not be eligible to teach in affiliated institutions and hence the students shall be left in a lurch after completion of this Diploma," it stated.
