President clears CJ appointments to 5 High Courts

NEW DELHI: Days after the Centre assured the Supreme Court that appointment of judges would be expedited, the President on Friday approved appointment of five new Chief Justices to various High Courts in the country. The appointments have been made to High Courts of Kerala, Calcutta, Sikkim, Tripura and Manipur. The appointment comes at a time when 35 recommendations of the Collegium on fresh judicial appointments and promotions are awaiting clearance from the highest levels in the government. Earlier this week, Attorney General Mukul Rohtagi had told the Supreme Court that there was no delay in appointment of High Court judges and the issue was the topmost priority of the government. Justice Shanatanagoudar Mohan Mallikarjunagouda, who was transferred from the High Court of Karnataka to Kerala was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court. Being the senior-most judge in the Karnataka High Court, he was transferred to Kerala and later became the acting Chief Justice of Kerala High Court. Justice Girish Chandra Gupta got elevated as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. Justice Satish Kumar Agnihotri, the acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Sikkim, has been confirmed as its next Chief Justice. Justice Tinlianthangh and Justice Rakesh Ranjan have been elevated as the new Chief Justices of the High Court of Tripura and Manipur, respectively. CJI wishes PM on his birthday Incidentally, the Chief Justice of India TS Thakur met the Prime Minister on Saturday in Gandhinagar and extended birthday greetings. The meet lasted 30-mins.
