Shivaji University recognized as examination centre for NET

KOLHAPUR: Aspiring professors from the region can from now appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET) from Shivaji University, Kolhapur. The University Grants Commission (UGC), the national body conducting the NET, has decided to hold the coming examination, at the Kolhapur-based university, a decision that has come as a welcome news for hundreds of aspirants who earlier had to travel to faraway places in other districts to appear for the examination. Sources said around 25,000 youths will appear for this year's examinations. The proposal to make SUK a centre was sent to the UGC by the university authorities six months ago. Considering the proposal of Shivaji University, the UGC approved it as its 83rd examination centre for NET examination. P V Anbhule, a member of the committee said, "In Maharashtra, there are only two examination centres for NET. One is in Pune and the other is in Nagpur. Students from Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts appearing for the NET examination have to travel all the ways to Pune for exam. It is not only expensive but is also causes a lot of inconvenience for the candidates. Taking into consideration their inconvenience , Shivaji University vice-chancellor N J Pawar appointed a three-member committee headed by M A Anuse, the head of the chemistry department. The panel sent the to the UGC demanding an centre for NET at the institute. The UGC has accepted the proposal and sent us a letter of approval. This is the 83rd examination centre in India." Gajanan Rashinkar, another member of the committee, said, "Shivaji University is conducting State Eligibility Test from 2007 and around 10,000 aspirants appear at the Kolhapur centre. We have the experience of conducting such examinations and will efficiently conduct NET as well. Around 25,000 aspirants from Kolhapur and adjoining districts appear for the test. The examination centre at Shivaji University will be helpful for the aspirants." Mahendra Metake, wh's preparing for the NET, said, "The examination centre at Kolhapur is a welcome step by the UGC. Earlier, we had to travel to Pune a day ahead of the exam or the night before. Both travelling to Pune and getting an accommodation in Pune were an expensive affair.
