KOZHIKODE: The State Government is on a mission to make Kerala a global destination in the field of higher education and technical education, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy while inaugurating the concluding session of the golden jubilee celebration of Government Arts and Science college, Meenchanda. While admitting that the state faltered in developing these two areas of education, he said that all the sections of the government are trying hard to achieve this objective. “Had we put in the same efforts in keeping the public education sector intact and developing, we could have reaped better results in the higher education and technical education sector and raisedthem to global standards. Our next target will be that and the Education Department has promised full support,” said the Chief Minister. He mentioned the incident of 435 students from Kerala, who were pursuing higher education in Ukraine, were caught in the middle of a riot. Chandy said that the state should have avoided that situation in which these students had to fly abroad to pursue higher education. Had the state offered same facilities here, these students could have avoided shifting to other states and countries. The new plan aims at luring even foreign students to the state. The Chief Minister promised to consider the appointment of five staff members for the ladies’ hostel of the college, in the next Cabinet meeting to be held on Wednesday. He added that already two courses were allotted after his government took over and by the beginning of the next academic year, more courses would be allotted. The Education Minister, who made the keynote address, said that the government was aiming at an ‘Academic City’ offering global standard education and the report was approved by the Cabinet. He admitted that the college had not achieved the growth it should have in the past 50 years and that was why the CM had given nod to the demands soon. M K Muneer presided over the function and reminisced the efforts of his father and former chief minister CH Mohammed Koya who was instrumental in shifting the college to its current premises. Principal P M Raghavan, DCC president K C Abu, Corporation Education Standing Committee chairperson P Ushadevi teacher, Dr Pavoor Saseendran, programme committee chairman Haridasan Palayil and college union vice-chairman Anugraha spoke at the event.
