PUNE: Six new technical colleges in the state, including an infrastructure studies and construction management institute at Ambi in Maval taluka, will begin functioning from this academic year after the department of higher and technical education gave its approval. Other institutes include a pharmacy college in Beed in Marathwada and four engineering colleges in Amravati in Vidarbha. All these institutes will go functional on a permanent no-grant basis following their approval by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), which is the regulatory body for technical studies in the country. The Institute of Infrastructure Studies and Construction Management (IISCM) at Ambi along the Talegaon-MIDC Road has been sanctioned a student intake of 120 seats for a full-time postgraduate (PG) diploma course in project management. The new management course will add to the IISCM's existing offer of a PG diploma programme in advanced infrastructure studies and construction management which is being offered to engineering and architecture graduates. The objective is to create a skilled force of techno commercial managers for the construction industry which is going through a boom phase in and around Pune. A new pharmacy college in Beed has been sanctioned with a student intake of 180 seats for an undergraduate course in pharmacy while the four engineering colleges at Amravati have been sanctioned a student intake of 60 each for courses in mechanical, computer science and engineering, electronics and telecommunication and electrical engineering. According to a government resolution (GR) issued by the H&TE department on Monday, these new institutes will have to secure affiliation from the state universities concerned and will also be required to sign an agreement assuring strict adherence to the norms set by the government and the AICTE. They have to furnish a security deposit in the form of a joint account with the director of technical education and will fall within the ambit of the Shikshan Shulka Samiti (fees regulation panel).
