JAIPUR: Faculty crunch and poor facilities added with unserious students enrolled for M Tech in engineering colleges affiliated to Rajasthan Technical University has degraded the quality of Masters degree programme. Data says that over 60% students enrolled in M Tech 2006 and 2011 have failed to submit their thesis till date. Of the total 25% who have submitted their papers, 25% have been rejected due to incomplete research and violation of copyright. The data has revealed that mostly candidates who lack the aptitude are pursuing masters degree, since the AICTE has made it compulsory for teachers to have M Tech degrees. "In many cases they found that thesis were copied from internet verbatim and were detected easily," said RP Yadav, vice-chancellor, RTU. RTU's 35 affiliated colleges are offering M-tech degrees. So far, none of the students and supervisors was booked in the copyright act in the absence of any proper rules in this regard. In fact, very few of them have a mechanism in place to check the quality of thesis or detect plagiarism. The data available on RTU website revealed that many students pursued full time M Tech degrees while being in job simultaneously. This is against UGC rule which doesn't allow part-time M Tech degrees. "They have asked colleges to follow every rule while recruiting faculty. Though we have a mechanism to identify malpractices and report to the respective colleges, UGC wants our affiliated colleges to follow rules strictly," said Yadav, who adds that these students will teach budding engineers.
