Telangana State government moves against errant technological colleges
published on : 08-23-2014
Category : All India Council for Technical Education
The Telangana state government on Friday submitted before the Hyderabad High Court that the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University was empowered to affiliate or disaffiliate colleges if they were found to be violating the prescribed norms. While defending the action of the government of not including 174 private engineering colleges in the ongoing Web counselling for Eamcet 2014 admissions, advocate general, K. Ramakrishna Reddy, said that the petitioner colleges had failed to comply with the conditions of affiliation and the norms stipulated by the All India Council for Technical Education despite the varsity insisting that they be followed. He said that the government’s task force committee and the varsity’s fact-finding committee had found several deficiencies during inspections including shortage of computers, faculty and basic amenities. He was arguing before Justice A. Rajasekhar Reddy on a batch of petitions by the managements of engineering colleges challenging the action of the varsity in cancelling their affiliation and the action of the Higher Education Council in not including the colleges for counselling. The advocate-general also told the court that these private engineering colleges had only been barred from counselling. He said that the university had sent notices to these colleges about the non-compliance of mandatory academic requirements and conditions for grant of affiliation from time to time and only 112 colleges had responded to the notices. The arguments will continue on Saturday.
