Four colleges received UGC's College of Excellence award

UGC (University Grants Commission), the apex governing body for universities has conferred four colleges the status of 'College of Excellence' reported a newspaper daily. St Xavier's-Kolkata, St Xavier's-Mumbai, Loyola Chennai and St Joseph's-Bangalore have been selected for the award. These four colleges will be given a grant of Rs 2 crore to be spent over 5 years for specific purposes. One of the top educational bodies in the country, University Grants Commission (UGC) has chosen four colleges for the `College of Excellence' award. It has been reported that four Jesuit colleges;Loyola Chennai, St Joseph's-Bangalore, St Xavier's-Kolkata and St Xavier's-Mumbai have been selected for the college of excellence award. UGC only began conferring on colleges the Potential for Excellence award about a decade ago. Two hundred of the 30,000 colleges in India were selected for this award, which included generous funding for infrastructure and educational upgradation. St Xavier's College - Mumbai was selected for this awards for the second time. The first time in 2006 it was granted Rs 2.5 crore in funding over 8 years. Some months ago the UGC announced a sequel, "The College of Excellence (CE)" award. St Xavier's -Mumbai principal Fr Frazer Mascaren has acknowledging the award his college received said that the progress the college did with change in research profile that the college made in the last three years, with many national and international publications, patents, research and consultancy projects has made it eligible for the award again.
