INFANT AND CHILD MORTALITY IN INDIA: A SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

Abstract :

An infant death refers to any baby who was born alive but died before his or her first birthday. The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is the number of such deaths per 1,000 live births in any given time period. This measure is a barometer used worldwide to determine the health of a community. In Milwaukee, infants are dying at a rate that remains a public health crisis. Infant mortality is an indicator of the health status not only of infants, but also of the whole population and of their social and economic status. They face excessive vulnerability, as underprivileged, to a hostile environment and suffer from malnutrition and serious health problems.
