Abstract :

Bharati Mukherjee’s The Holder of the World is a multi-faceted and multi-dimensional novel which can be read on many levels. It is a fascinating account of greed and ambition, lust and power, battles and betrayals, travel and history, interesting ideas and difficult concepts woven around the life of an unusual 17th century American woman, Hannah Easton and her travels through England and then Moghul India, and the way it affects her personality. An attempt has been made here to examine if it is a kind of bildungsroman, a distinct kind of novel in its own way.
