REFLECTIONS OF PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC SETUP – A Case Study of Koddappamund Village, Udhagamandalam (Ooty), Tamil Nadu

Abstract :

The subject Geography deals with the spatial variation of different attributes over the earth's surface. The land with its landscape provides opportunities for the people to live in and that also differ depending on the geographical location. The history, culture, living style and stage of development of a social group or nation are exclusively or largely governed by the physical factors of environment. Observation, description, explanation and presentation are significant stages of representing the physical, economic and socio-cultural aspects of the earth's surface are the utmost objectives of any geographers and field scientists. The present study concentrates on Kodappamund village one of the 19 villages of Udhagamandalam block and one of the 54 revenue villages of Nilgiri district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Kottarumand is a small and a picturesque village located on the terrace of the Nilgiris in the vicinity of the town of Udhagamandalam. It has a total number of 88 houses, mostly dependent on agriculture and tourism and is situated 7 kms away from the main town of Ooty. How people dwelling in this village has moulded their life and adjusted to the physical environment of the area has been highlighted. Problems related to water scarcity, infrequent rainfall pattern leading to agriculture related problems, highland areas are some of the problems which act as hindrance to a normal lifestyle to people.
