ROLE, IMPORTANCE AND CHALLENGES OF THE EDUCATION LOAN SCHEME

Abstract :

The cost of higher education is growing fast and the common man in India finds it very difficult to meet the educational expenses of their children. Through Education Loans, parents have easy access for financing their children's higher education. The boom in the banking sector has led to release of large amount of funds for education loans. Indian Bank provides convenient educational loans for the students to acquire knowledge and skill in the field of their interest. The student loan covers school, college or hostel fees as well as cost for buying books and other necessary items. An applicant is sanctioned a loan of maximum Rs 10 lakh for studying in India and Rs 20 lakh for studying in abroad. No security is required for loan amount up to Rs 4 lacs. The borrower can begin repaying 6 months after getting job or one year after the course is completed, whichever happens earlier. Banks may arrange for life insurance policy on the students availing Educational Loan. Securing education loan in India may sound easy, but is full of obstacles, challenges and formalities.
