DOI : 10.9780/22307850, By : Laxmi Book Publication

Abstract :

This paper shows why did the East India Company change its policy towards India? Or, why did the East India Company need to teach India about the good governance in spite of learning from Indian society? There are various reasons which show the hidden reality about this change in the policy of the East India Company. In the colonial India we find how the Indians were determined to keep their cultural diversity? The reformists and nationalists campaigned for keeping and maintaining cultural diversity. The liberal British administrators initially tried to reorganize Indian society in the image of Europe, guided by political philosophies such as utilitarianism. So, that they could get to resemblance to India with England by which they could enhance their trade. But their policy failed due to the violent insistence for keeping difference and distinctness of the Indian people. We also find that the widespread perception of British interference in the religion and culture of the Indians was one of the factors behind the revolt of 1857. This revolt gave a lesson to British rulers and after the revolt they encouraged various policies and provisions which could maintain cultural diversity in the colonial India.
