Abstract :

India, the world's second most populous country , has experienced a dramatic demographic transition in the past 50 years, entailing almost a tripling of the population over the age of 60 years (i.e., the elderly) (Government of India, 2011). As there is increase in the elderly population it results in number of problems. The healthcare and care giving problems are major problems when compared with the other problems. Health is the single most important determinant of the quality of life among elderly . The health status of the elderly is determined by the economic, social, psychological and physiological factors. With advancing age, ill-health becomes a major hindrance for the well-being of the elderly and affects the daily activities. The vulnerability , helplessness among the older population is due to the economic dependency . They need to inevitably depend on their young ones in their later life. Thus, the present paper addresses the effects of poverty and social inequities on elderly health care and well being.
