Abstract :

The investigation was undertaken to study the gross, histological and histochemical changes that occur within the spleen of fish after treatment with cadmium chloride. Exposure to concentration of 8 ppm for 6 days and 22 days was carried out on the fish. Spleen in the treated fish showed necrosis, increased haemopoiesis with 8 ppm for 6 days and followed by decrease in haemopoietic activity after 22 days. Haemosiderin granules increase drastically after 22 days. The secretion of mucus appears to increase with the treatment. The glycogen activity increased after treatment with 8 ppm for 6 days but showed a decline after 22 days. The study has shown that alkaline phosphatase activity increases whereas the acid phosphatase activity decreases.
