Abstract :

The present study was conducted to know the “Perception related to female foeticide among Muslim community”. The sample comprised of 100 respondents (46 mothers and 44 fathers) and 10 doctors. The sample was selected from four selected Muslim dominated areas of Jammu district. Tool used for study were self-devised interview schedule and questionnaire and data was collected through home visits and hospital visits. The results of the study reveal that majority of parents and doctors were aware about the prevalence and causes of female foeticide. According to majority of respondents, major factors responsible for declining sex ratio/female foeticide were son preference and lack of religious knowledge. Majority of doctors responded that family and social values, son preference and availability of technology are responsible for sex determination. Parents were aware about the decline in sex ratio at national and state level but were unaware about exact sex ratio. Doctors were aware about declining sex ratio, both at national and state level but no one gave exact figure. Results show that majority of respondents were unaware about the amount of fine and period of imprisonment under PNDT Act. It also reveals that doctors were aware about the conditions and provisions made by the government under MTP and PNDT Act where as parents were unaware about these conditions and provisions.
