Abstract :

Most of the former colonies were awakening to a new light of independence as the British Empire was falling into oblivion. However, one country among these colonies was undergoing a dual process of breaking and making. It was India. The partition of India into two separate states was a momentous event in the history of the world. The 1947 partition lingers as a contemporary phenomenon, rather than a bygone event. This is corroborated by the fact that several works regarding partition are surfacing and becoming a part of the genre of postcolonial literature. On the Indian side, many writers have tried to spawn a diverse perspective of this particular historical event. For a majority of Indian writers like Manohar Malgonkar, B Rajan, Chaman Nahal, Khushwant Singh, Attia Hosain and others, the partition implied an act of betrayal of the national cause by the so-called 'separatist' Muslims. These writers sympathize with the Indian cause in one way or the other. The Pakistani's visualized the partition as a necessary step towards the realization of nationhood and a safe homeland for South Asian Muslims. While India celebrated Independence from British rule, Pakistan hailed it as a freedom from Britain as well as India. But unfortunately very few writers like Mehr Nigar, Mumtaz Shah Nawaz and Bapsi Sidhwa from Pakistani side have put forth their version of the holocaust of partition.
